CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS

A photojournalist with KRDO, Channel 13 arrived early yesterday to cover opening remarks from various state and local officials. The visit ended with a 20 minute interview with Hans Kallam, DEM Director. Because of the TV coverage, more stations may respond to document the conference.

The Eastern Colorado Incident Management Team (ECIMT) has begun their third year supporting the EM conference. This year’s team is headquartered in the Board Room around the corner from check-in. Stop by and see a state Type-3 Command and General staff in action.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture (DOA) recently signed a MOU with the ECIMT. Because of this first of a kind agreement, $34,000 in equipment support has been given to the team. Thanks to Bill Bennett of DOA for his coordinating efforts to make this MOU happen. Conference attendees are reminded that CDs of each presentation are available at check-in. Please stop by and pick-up your copy. These will also be posted online at http://coemcon.blogspot.com

COEMCON Morning Activities - February 23, 2010

Busy opening morning. Looks like everyone got here Ok, which is good. It is also nice that the weather held up and is sunny. Last thing an emergency management conference needs is to have a start that requires us to be potential victims in one of Colorado's early-year winter storms...

This morning opened with a great moderator, Jon Karroll of http://www.krdo.com who ran this morning's activities, including a presentation by both the Colorado Springs Police Color Guard and an incredible demonstration by the Pikes Peak Region Police Pipe and Drum Band. For pictures, be sure to check out out our twitpic feeds from attendees by going to http://search.twitter.com and looking up #coemcon

These presentations were followed by a presentation by the representative of the Governor's Office, Dr. Susan Kirkpatrick, the Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Local Affairs and then by the keynote speaker, Lucien Canton (http://www.luciencanton.com).

Lucien will also be speaking on a Recovery Lessons Learned panel later today and we are all looking forward to hearing from his experiences to help us learn how to enhance our disaster recovery plans here in Colorado.

We even got Hans Kallam, Director of the Division of Emergency Management, to do an interview with http://www.krdo.com so look for that tonight! Will post a link here when it is available.

As we move forward, come back and visit because the handouts, presentations and other pics and videos will be linked here. If you need anything during the conference, be sure to stop by the front desk/registration table or just give me a call at (303) 472-4087 and we'll see how we can help! Thanks - Brandon (brandon.williams@state.co.us)

CEMA Student Scholarship Silent Auction

A new and fun activity will be part of the 2010 Colorado Governor’s Conference on Emergency Management. A silent auction to benefit the Colorado Emergency Management Association’s student scholarship program will be held at the 2010 Colorado Governor’s Conference on Emergency Management. Themed-baskets filled with a variety of exciting items donated by conference attendees along with other surprise donations will be available to win by the highest bidders.

Want to play? You are invited to participate in two ways:

1) by donating theme-baskets that reflect something special from your local area or a favorite topic of interest. For example: The City of Loveland will be making a “sweethearts” theme basket.
2) by bringing your checkbook to the silent auction. There will be a variety of items that are sure to catch your eye!

Be creative! CEMA will recognize with much pomp and circumstance, ceremonial splendor, and a huge thank you to the group, jurisdiction, or individual with most popular basket (as demonstrated by the highest bid amount).

For more information or to donate a basket, please call Pat Mialy at 970-962-2534 or e-mail to mialyp@ci.loveland.co.us . The deadline for basket entry is February 19, 2010.

Contributions or gifts to Colorado Emergency Management Association are not deductible as charitable contributions for Federal income tax purposes.

Vendor/Exhibitor Slots Filling Up

There are still opportunities for vendors and exhibitors to participate in the 2010 Governor's Emergency Management Conference. More than 300 attendees were at the last conference, including representatives from emergency management, public safety, public health, communications, voluntary organizations and local government.

Located at the Cheyenne Mountain Conference Center, each sponsor/exhibitor will receive a table and spot in the general area of the conference. For additional logistics information, check the conference's Sponsorship and Exhibitor Registration page.

For any questions about spots, scheduling or other arrangements, contact Cindy Vonfeldt at cindy.vonfeldt@state.co.us or at (720) 852-6628.
